Celebration of the Life and Achievements of Mary Claire Bondurant Warren

In collaboration with Laura Williams Carter, Kenneth H. Thomas Jr., and Charlotte Thomas Marshall; University of Georgia's Hargrett Library; Lee Epting; Sam Thomas; The Athens Historical Society; and the Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room we welcome you to celebrate the life of Mary Claire Bondurant Warren.

There are untold thousands whose research skills have been informed and widened by her lectures, workshops and publications. Many have passed on, as has she. Those of us yet living want to testify to her significance and the debt we owe her. We want to spread the word so all of her mentees can participate. The program will be recorded and later uploaded to the Athens-Clarke County Library’s Heritage Room Youtube page for the benefit of those unable to attend.

What to expect – the details of the actual program are still being developed, but it is anticipated that there will be about five speakers (limited to five minutes each) addressing the various areas of her activity and contributions. Printed programs will include a biographical sketch with photographs. There will be a display of her publications – and a form for ordering those still in print or online. She was prolific – more than 200 titles! The adjoining Multi-purpose Rooms are being reserved for the reception being hosted by Lee Epting of Epting Events (and successor rescuer of the weathervane made for First United Methodist Church by her father and his father). A video loop, prepared by her daughter Eve Mayes, of photographs illustrating her life and involvements will be seen on all three screens in the reception rooms.

Friends who haven’t been together in three or more years will be swapping Mary anecdotes and having the equivalent of a family reunion – Mary’s family of followers. She quarantined from Covid before the pandemic was declared and instructed her family that no funeral service should be held because she wanted no one infected as a result of a gathering for her. Her death, therefore received only brief notice. Her life deserves recognition and celebration, and it is our wish to provide that occasion.

Mary Claire, aka Mary Bondurant Warren, would be mortified by all of this attention, BUT she richly deserves it!
